Why does the school corporation need its own Police Department?

BCSC has over 7000 students and over 1000 employees on its campuses every day. Safety and security for them is one of our single most important considerations. For over a decade BCSC has had police officers on campus as full time employees of the School Corporation. In 2007 the Indiana legislature gave school districts the power to form their own police departments, so BCSC formed its own department in 2008. There was little noticeable difference, no additional cost, and it has enabled us to operate more efficiently and with clearer lines of communication and authority.
