Why are the high ability students the only students required to complete homework over the summer?

High ability classes are not only accelerated, but also provide a much deeper exploration of the required Indiana academic standards. The summer learning experiences are intended to provide two things to augment the rigorous experience:
1. Summer homework is conscientiously designed to complement the teacher's initial units, which allows students to begin rich study immediately on the first day of school.
2. Because of the tremendous academic challenge of the high ability program, students cannot afford to experience the expected decline of skills over the summer break.

The high ability program is both rigorous and optional. Students who lack the desire to meet the expectations of this program may opt out in favor of a general education placement.
