The Indiana Department of Education Child Nutrition Programs policy states that “Each local educational agency (LEA) participating in the School Breakfast Program and the National School Lunch Program shall establish for schools under their authority a local school wellness policy.” To be included are goals for nutrition education, physical activity, and other schoolbased activities that are designed to promote student wellness in a manner that the local educational agency determines is appropriate. In addition, the policy is to include nutrition guidelines selected by the (LEA) for all foods available on each school campus during the school day with the objectives of promoting student health and reducing childhood obesity (Public Law 108-265).
The BCSC “Wellness” policy 8510, states that the Board of School Trustees designate the building principals as the individuals charged with operational responsibility for measuring and evaluating the Corporation’s implementation and progress under this policy. The policy is reviewed by a committee appointed by the Board consisting of a representative of the Board, the administration, the Director of Food Services, the Director of Health Services, students, parents and other community members. The committee shall provide the Board with any recommended changes to this policy.
Elementary schools have adopted a wellness guideline for classroom snacks, which may be found on the elementary schools’ websites. Additionally, vending is not allowed during the school day to middle school students and is never available to elementary students. Vending machines in the high school must offer 50% healthy beverages and foods. Refer to Vending policy 8540 for further information.
