BCSC and other school districts are seeing an increase in reports of theft of electronic devices. This is primarily due to the fact that more students are bringing electronic devices to school, and frequently providing a prime opportunity for theft by not properly securing them.
BCSC student handbooks at every level address the issue of cell phones and other electronic devices at school. Briefly, they all state:
- Students and parents are advised not to bring valuable items to school.
- All devices are to be powered off and restricted to lockers during the school day.
A number of proactive responses are currently being considered, including teaching students how to decrease their risk of victimization, registering electronic devices, and encouraging students to share information on thefts.
Parents can help resolve this issue by teaching children to leave their devices in their lockers during school hours and make sure the locker is secure.
