Why are four new positions being added to BCSC to oversee secondary math, English, science and social studies? I thought the plan was to do things to help keep more teachers in classroom?
In 2008-2009 BCSC had 50 administrators. In the fall of 2011, that number will be reduced to 37, saving the district more than $1.6 million in salaries and benefits. Nearly 25% of those reductions were in central office positions. The positions referred to in the question are part-time teaching positions and part-time department leadership positions overseeing the curriculum in grades 6-12. The departmental leadership roles assume the functions once assumed by central office administrators and still teach classes. The high school lost two dean positions and added one assistant principal position--down one position.
